      systems clearly appeals to the entrepreneurial spirit. Hundreds of =
cable=20
      brands are listed for sale, all claiming to deserve the =
expenditure of=20
      your hard-earned money. Some cables emphasize value, others =
technology,=20
      and others still craftsmanship -- or combinations of one or more =
of these.=20
      While they can=92t all be the best, some wags question if any of =
them are=20
      better than the 20-cents-a-foot lamp cord sold at your local =
hardware=20
      store.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>In my experience, the =
cables that=20
      have the greatest effect on a system=92s sound are interconnects, =
which=20
      transmit the lowest-level audio signals. Perhaps that=92s because =
when the=20
      signal is weakest, intrusions and distortions are easiest to hear. =
No=20
      cable carries lower-level signals than the one that connects a =
turntable=92s=20
      tonearm to the input of the phono preamp. Signals passing through =
phono=20
      cables are at the lowest level found anywhere in an audio system, =
often=20
      just fractions of a millivolt. If any cable affects the sound of =
the=20
      signal passing through it, it=92s got to be the phono cable. This =
may=20
      explain why so few cable companies make phono cables. </FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>When I heard that =
Crystal Cable was=20
      offering not one but two different phono cables, I was eager to =
try them.=20
      I had been hugely impressed with other Crystal Cable products when =
I=20
      reviewed them last year. In fact, I subsequently purchased Crystal =
Cable=20
      interconnects and speaker cables, and they see daily use in my=20
      system.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" =
size=3D3><B>Description</B></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Crystal Cable pursues =
<I>small</I>=20
      with a vengeance. Physically tiny in comparison to most of the=20
      competition, Crystal Cable products' performance is dynamic and =
robust.=20
      Besides, for the fractional millivolt signals found between the =
tonearm=20
      and phono preamp, even a small conductor should be just =
fine.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>I received =
CrystalConnect<B>=20
      </B>Piccolo ($399 USD per meter-and-a-quarter length) and=20
      CrystalConnect<B> </B>Micro phono cables ($599 per =
meter-and-a-quarter=20
      length). Both had a ground wire slightly longer than the signal =
wires,=20
      terminated with a small spade lug. The manufacturer describes the =
wire=20
      itself this way: </FONT></P>

      cables use proprietary RCA plugs the have no locking collar on the =
preamp=20
      end. Because I=92ve used Crystal Cable interconnects for some =
time, I can=20
      report that the RCA plugs snap tightly onto every RCA jack I have =
ever=20
      plugged them into, and don=92t seem to lose their grip over time.=20
</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>On the tonearm end, the =
Crystal=20
      Cable phono cables use a five-pin TAC-5 DIN plug that mates with =
all the=20
      tonearms I=92ve seen. The tonearm plug of the review cables had a =
90-degree=20
      bend that would have been great for tonearms where the DIN plug =
goes=20
      vertically into the base of the 'arm. My Graham 'arm already had a =

      90-degree bend where the cable plugs in, but the Crystal Cable =
phono=20
      cables still worked fine.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>The Piccolo phono cable =
uses a=20
      0.3mm-diameter inner wire, while the Micro uses 0.5mm-diameter =
wire;=20
      otherwise, construction is the same. Electrically, the Piccolo =
cable has=20
      an inner wire capacitance of 154 picofarads, and a resistance of =
224=20
      milliohms; the Micro cable has an&nbsp;inner wire capacitance 248=20
      picofarads and a resistance of 132 milliohms. These are both quite =
low,=20
      and shouldn=92t perceptibly degrade the signal. Visually, the =
cables are=20
      identical, although the Micro is just a little stiffer. =
</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3><B>Setting =
up</B></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>According to Crystal =
Cable=92s former=20
      US distributor, each set of cables needs 500 hours of break-in. =
Normal=20
      interconnects are easy to break in; just connect them to your =
tuner and=20
      play it for the specified break-in period. Breaking in phono =
cables using=20
      music is much more challenging. You could break them in by playing =
LPs,=20
      but an LP has maybe 25 minutes of music on a side, which means =
you=92d have=20
      to play 1200 LP sides to break in a phono cable. While that might =
be fun,=20
      it wouldn=92t work too well for a deadline-driven review. I =
suspect that=20
      some phono cables <I>never</I> get broken in. Ditto for the wires =
inside=20
      tonearms. </FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>I have my own solution =
to this=20
      dilemma. Using a homemade adapter and the Purist Audio Design =
break-in CD,=20
      which I find very effective for cable break-in, I put 500 hours of =
use on=20
      both cables.</FONT></P>

turntable, phono=20
      cables have to pass through a plastic clamp (called a P clip) that =
secures=20
      them to the turntable base to prevent vibrations or torsional =
forces on=20
      the phono cable from passing to the base of the tonearm. The =
Crystal Cable=20
      phono cables were so small in diameter that they were difficult to =
clamp=20
      with the P clip, but with some expert help from Mark Heaston, Linn =
setup=20
      guru from audio dealership Concert Sound, I think we succeeded. =
The=20
      miniscule size of the Crystal Cables made them unusually flexible =
and easy=20
      to route from the turntable to the preamp. The only problem I had =
was=20
      getting them routed around some much thicker cables in my=20
      system.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3><B>So what do they =
sound=20
      like?</B></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Given the physical =
similarities of=20
      these two phono cables, I wondered if I=92d be able to hear any =
difference=20
      between them. My worries proved groundless.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>I initially used the =
Micro, and it=20
      exhibited two predominant characteristics. First, it passed a wide =
range=20
      of dynamics, from the quietest microdynamic to the loudest =
macrodynamic,=20
      and those dynamics had great agility and impact. That meant that=20
      orchestral climaxes came through uncompressed and undistorted, =
while on=20
      the microdynamic end of the scale, the most subtle inflections =
singers=20
      used to interpret a song were easy to hear, making performances =
more=20
      moving. The Micro didn=92t soften the dynamics, either; when a =
sudden=20
      increase in volume occurred, it was abrupt, with lots of impact, =
which=20
      added to the excitement of a performance.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>The other =
characteristic of the=20
      Micro was coherence. It passed a notably wide range of =
frequencies, from=20
      highest treble to lowest bass, with no noticeable peaks in the =
amplitude=20
      response, and no smearing of the time relationships of the =
frequencies. As=20
      a result, a trumpet sounded distinctly like a trumpet, and a =
soprano=20
      sounded distinctly like a soprano. Coupled with the Micro's wide =
dynamic=20
      envelope, this coherence produced a very realistic reproduction of =
musical=20
      performances.</FONT></P>

Cassidy=92s=20
      compilation LP <I>Songbird</I> [S&amp;P Records S&amp;P-501], =
whose high=20
      frequencies are smoother than those of the original CD. The Micro=20
      presented "Fields of Gold" with unusual clarity. I heard subtle=20
      inflections in Cassidy=92s phrasing that had been smeared in the =
past,=20
      making her interpretations even more touching. Although it=92s =
obvious that=20
      this LP has plenty of high-frequency content, it was not at all =
peaky=20
      through the Micro.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Donald Johanos and the =
Dallas=20
      Symphony Orchestra=92s performance of <I>Rachmaninoff=92s =
Symphonic Dances</I>=20
      [Athena ASLW-10001] was one of the earliest reissue spectaculars, =
and=20
      still sounds quite good. The recording=92s strong dynamic =
contrasts and=20
      realistic instrumental timbres were a made-to-order showcase for =
the=20
      Micro. The tinkling triangles soared freely over the orchestra, =
thanks to=20
      the extended high-frequency response. Low frequencies not only =
went deep,=20
      but were reproduced with the same full-bodied dynamic scale as the =
rest of=20
      the frequency spectrum.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>The Micro cable=92s =
extended high=20
      frequencies could make the sound slightly bright in some systems. =
In=20
      others, they could inject some welcome sparkle into the music. =
Adjusting=20
      the cartridge VTA can reduce the high-frequency output to =
compensate, if=20
      you think it=92s necessary.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>The Piccolo phono =
cable=92s sound was=20
      cut from the same cloth, but it filtered out more information than =
the=20
      Micro. Missing were the Micro=92s robust low-frequency response =
and=20
      dynamics, although the high frequencies were extended. The balance =
between=20
      the Piccolo=92s highs and lows resulted in a brighter sound, =
perhaps too=20
      bright for some (but not all) systems. If your system lacks highs =
and has=20
      an overabundance of lows, the Piccolos could be a great choice. =
Although=20
      the Piccolo sounded good, it lacked the startling clarity of the =
Micro.=20
      Spending the additional $200 for the Micro is a no-brainer. =
</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" =
size=3D3><B>Comparison</B></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>For some time, my =
reference phono=20
      cable has been Purist Audio Design Venustas. This cable was =
specifically=20
      designed for a Linn turntable, so the section inside the turntable =
base is=20
      a single cable, splitting into two separate cables where they exit =
the=20
      turntable base. The $1775 Venustas is totally different from the =
Micro and=20
      Piccolo. Purist uses a powdered substance called Ferox to insulate =
its=20
      cables from both electrical noise and physical vibration. The =
result is=20
      quite audible; you=92ll first notice it as lots of musical detail =
without a=20
      smidgen of high-frequency emphasis.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Detail through the =
Venustas is=20
      excellent from deep bass up to the highest frequencies, and unlike =
some=20
      cables, it doesn=92t fake detail by accentuating high frequencies. =
But on=20
      <I>Rachmaninoff=92s Symphonic Dances</I>, the Venustas sounded a =
bit less=20
      transparent and dynamic than the Micro. High frequencies were less =

      extended, although bass extension was quite good. The sound was =
just less=20
      alive. Both cables sounded very quiet in the absence of a=20
      signal.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>The Crystal Cable Micro =
and the=20
      Purist Audio Design Venustas phono cables both have strong points, =
but the=20
      Micro is <I>much</I> less expensive. The Piccolo is more of a =
mixed bag.=20
      On most material, the Purist cable=92s wider, better-balanced =
frequency=20
      response gave it the edge over the Piccolo.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3><B>Small is =
big</B></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Crystal Cable=92s Micro =
phono cable=20
      passes a huge amount of information from the phono cartridge to =
the=20
      preamp, with exceptional clarity and dynamics. That makes the =
music more=20
      exciting and involving. At $599, I can=92t think of a better =
value. It is=20
      also a joy to handle -- much easier to plug in and route around =
your=20
      components than the typically thick cables favored by audiophiles. =
The=20
      Piccolo is less sonically distinguished, but can still be =
considered=20
      appropriate for use in certain systems. </FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3>Try some Crystal Cables =
and find=20
      out for yourself that <I>small</I> <I>rules.</I></FONT></P>
